Dirk Nowitzki is one of those rare players that literally everyone seems to like. In a league full of loaded personalities, there are often clashes or players that certain fan groups despise.
Not Dirk, though. Everyone loves Dirk.
That’s what makes it such an emotional goodbye now that the 7-foot tall German has decided to call it a career. The longtime Dallas Mavericks legend said goodbye to the fan base that has come to know him so well, young or old. One guy that has been there for basically every step of the way is Mavs play-by-play announcer Mark Followill.
Not only has he been there (for approximately 1,300 of his 1,521, going by his estimates), he’s also been the voice of many big moments. The combination made for one of the coolest “open letter” video tributes that the 40-year-old could possibly receive.
Dirk provides the visual, Followill provides the audio. Dirk’s legacy is engraved in stone, and the emotional video is sure to bring a tear to the eye of Mavs and basketball fans everywhere.
Alongside Dirk, Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade also took his fan base down an emotional goodbye. For Wade’s goodbye, it was Budweiser that provided the goosebumps.
The basketball world will miss two of its superstars, but they will certainly not be forgotten.
