The University of Miami’s football chain has received an upgrade for the ages.
The team’s new tradition became popular with college football fans last season, but fans are glowing over the new one which was spotted in the team’s massive win over Savannah State. During the team’s 77-0 blowout (yes, they did cover a +61 ½ point spread), the team whipped out the new piece of jewelry.
And here’s what it looked like last year.
Pretty night and day!
The tradition started last year when cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph asked a local Miami jeweler to make a rope chain for player. But former University of Miami legend Vince Wilfork, who was in the store at the time, had other ideas.
The following is an excerpt from Sports Illustrated:
The initial thought was a rope chain that players would get to wear after forcing a turnover.
“Naw, man,” chimed in Wilfork, recently retired after a 13-year NFL career. “We got to do the Cuban link, AJ!”
The consensus among the three was a collective “Hell yeah!”
“In Miami, what are we famous for? We’re famous for the Cuban chains,” Machado says. “But we need to add a little something to it.
“So we did a big U charm — orange stones, green stones in there to flash it out.”
Prepare yourself to see plenty more of this massive thing of beauty.
