We’ve seen some pretty unreal theme night jerseys in sports.

From a great nod to ‘The Office’, to a Harry Potter tribute in the ECHL, there has been no shortage of fun and creative tribute jerseys.

This one might just be our favourite.

The St Louis Blues’ American Hockey League Affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, is paying homage to the city’s rich Mexican and Latin American culture with these sweet ‘Día de los Muertos’, or ‘Day of the Dead’, threads.

On Friday, October 26th, when San Antonio hosts the San Jose Barracuda, they will turn into the ‘Chimuelos de San Antonio’.

After some investigating, we’ve discovered that a ‘chimuelo’ is a toothless man, which we think is a pretty spot-on and hilarious name for a hockey team.

The Mexican holiday is meant remember friends and family members who have died, and help support their spiritual journey. It is observed over a number of days, and includes many festivals and parades.

San Antonio is pulling out all the stops for the event, and will have themed food trucks outside the arena, to set the scene for the party happening inside the rink.

The Chimuelos will celebrate the holiday with awesome merchandise, goalie masks that will feature sugar skulls, and a full blown festival before the game that will include cultural dancing, face painting, and a Día de los Muertos altar, where, traditionally, observers of the holiday place photos of loved ones to honour the dead. Even the team’s mascot is getting a makeover for the evening as T-Bone will be replaced with El Bistec, which means ‘steak’ in Spanish.

“We are a city proud of our Hispanic heritage and in this changing world, now more than ever, it’s important that we take time to reflect and acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of the entire Latino community.” Ryan Snider, the team’s director of business operations, told Sports Illustrated’s Luis Miguel Echegaray.

We love a good theme night, and we are definitely confident that this one will be a wild success.
