On August 7, 2019, the Kansas City Royals and the Boston Red Sox were forced to suspend their game due to heavy rain while they were locked in a 4-4 tie in the 10th inning.
Fast forward two weeks and the two teams were back on the field at Fenway Park on Thursday afternoon to complete their game from earlier this month, and it took the hosts just 12 minutes to come away with a 5-4 victory. However, just because fans knew it was a ‘first team to score wins’ type of scenario, that didn’t stop them from showing up to the ballpark and they got a better turnout than nearly half the league would get during an afternoon game.
In order for the Red Sox to get fans out to the game to avoid playing the remainder of the game in front of an empty stadium, the team charged $5 for adult tickets while it was free for children, and let fans sit wherever they wanted. On top of that, all proceeds from the ticket sales went towards the Jimmy Fund for cancer research.
Kids also got the chance to walk around the field before the game started and there were all sorts of activities for them to take part in outside and throughout the stadium.
