While Fortnite remains the videogame of choice for athletes and regular folks alike, the Pittsburgh Penguins found a way to change things up while flying to Washington for Saturday’s Game 5. Just about everyone on the team had their Nintendo Switch out, facing off in the timeless arena that is the game of Mario Kart.
The real scoop here is that somebody on the team is nicknamed “Daddy,” and that Daddy was giving Conor Sheary some trouble with a boomerang. What a time to be alive.
One thing: Where is Phil Kessel in all of this? You already know that the culture needs to see Kessel run Mario Kart, at least for a few races, and ideally with some kind of live commentary or camera feed. Can you imagine how genuinely hilarious it would be to see Phil Kessel struck by a blue shell? The folks at Twitch need to make this happen, now.
In a strange coincidence, you can also count Jay Beagle of the Washington Capitals among the people invested in getting Kessel on Mario Kart. When the Capitals met the Penguins in the playoffs around this time last year, things got a bit chippy on the ice and even inspired this bit of back-and-forth:
In this year’s version of the matchup, the Penguins and Capitals are currently tied 2-2 entering Game 5. Not that it hasn’t been a well-played, competitive affair on the ice, but we might just prefer to see these guys take it to Mario Kart. The culture needs this.
