He was one of the most hyped prospects we’ve seen in a minute, and he still is, but injuries have derailed the start of Zion Williamson’s NBA career. He still has yet to make his regular-season debut for the New Orleans Pelicans, and the team has been cautious with his progress from preseason knee surgery.
Now it looks like that as part of his process, the Pelicans are reteaching Zion how to run and walk. Yes, seriously.
The same reason that Zion is so special as a prospect — his unbelievable athleticism at a listed 6'6/285 lbs — also has some people concerned about whether or not his body can handle the wear and tear of a NBA season. Maybe this additional process in his injury rehab can be a short-term setback for a long-term impact.
It’s easy to freak out over Zion’s weight, flying up and down the court over 82 games, but it should still be said that he was a beast during preseason. In four appearances, he averaged 23.3 points per game on an absurd .714 field goal percentage. Yes, it was just preseason, but Zion was making it look easy in his first ever games as a pro. You can’t take that lightly under any circumstances.
Whenever Zion is able to return to the court, we’re sure he’s going to be must-watch television.
