When it comes to advanced stats, we usually leave our fine hockey writers to take care of that side of the industry. But we can’t help but share our intrigue over a new one that the NHL and Amazon are teaming up to introduce to the league in the coming future.
The two entities have come up with a new advanced stat called shot analytics and save analytics, which will allow teams to differentiate a goalie’s save percentage for glove saves and pads saves (as an example) from various locations. The stats requires both player and puck tracking.
Well that’s pretty darn cool!
It’s worth noting that the data will only be available to broadcasters for the upcoming playoffs, however, the goal is to have it available for fans next season. And if you can recall the whole chip-in-puck debacle from last season, they’re still in the testing process, too.
Just another reminder of how futuristic hockey is becoming. This one should be helpful!
