The Montreal Canadiens were in a 4-4 tie with the Washington Capitals when Max Domi scored the go-ahead goal with 22 seconds left in the game.

Two seconds later, Phillip Danault won the faceoff for the Habs leading to another goal from Joel Armia — Washington had pulled their goalie. With two goals in two seconds, the Canadiens broke a three-way tie to set a new NHL record: the fastest two goals scored in history.

The previous record was shared by the 2016 New York Islanders, 2004 Minnesota Wild and 1935 St. Louis Eagles, who all managed it in three seconds. It probably isn’t one of those records that fans in the arena would be immediately aware of, but we think that the whole two-goals-in-two-seconds thing is plenty of excitement to go around.

It isn’t the first milestone of note for the Habs on the night — Carey Price recently tied Patrick Roy for second place in wins by a goaltender, and with Thursday’s win, claims sole ownership with 290 wins. Not only that, but with the first two goals of his career, 18-year-old Jesperi Kotkaniemi etched his own name into the history books, and fans have got to be excited about that.
