If there was heartbreak for anyone tonight, it has to be Jacob deGrom.
As arguably one of the best pitchers within Major League Baseball (just don’t tell Shane Bieber), the two-time Cy Young Winner had his first regular-season start of the 2021 season as the Mets took on the Phillies to start their three-game series Monday evening.
And let us put it simply, deGrom was on FIRE.
Starting the game, he tossed 24 straight fastballs averaging 99.6 mph.
And even beyond not letting up any runs, he had two hits and snagged the first of the season for the blue and orange.
We know, pitchers who can rake are a guilty pleasure for us too.
BUT, unfortunately, not only for deGrom but for Mets fans, nature is healing and the fairytale was short-lived as deGrom was pulled after six innings.
Kissing deGrom’s shutout goodbye after 77 pitches and a 100 pitch count set prior to the game by Mets manager Luis Rojas, things quickly went south.
Following Miguel Castro replacing deGrom to start the bottom of the 7th, Trevor May took the mound for the Mets in the 8th where he loaded the bases following a walk and two hits.
Within the same inning, Aaron Loup replaced May to only hit Bryce Harper and kickoff the Phillies' 5-run inning.
This game marks the 31st time that the Mets bullpen has been unsuccessful in helping deGrom get a possible win.
The game final was 5-3 with the Phillies raining all over the Mets Opening Day parade.
Huge yikes.
Baseball Twitter blew up following tonight’s Mets loss with the main storyline being the win deGrom should have gotten.
