The 2018 MLB season saw its first triple play of the year on Thursday, thanks to the Seattle Mariners, and also thanks to a pretty strange blunder by Houston’s Evan Gattis. Hey, look, we all make silly mistakes sometimes... but most silly mistakes don’t lead to triple plays.

Batting with no outs and runners on first and second, Gattis had the misfortune of grounding out to third base for a double play, which, yes, was unfortunate, but nothing out of the ordinary. The real damage came when Gattis forgot the number of outs and stepped off the bag, allowing the Mariners to tag him out while he was, uh, returning to the dugout.

Yeah, that happens to the best of us (such as Evan Gattis, who gets paid to play baseball for a living), but that can’t be a fun way to give up an inning’s worth of outs. Not that it can ever be fun, but even as far as triple plays go, that reaaaaally sucks.

Let’s check in on the Astros!

Heh. In the long run, it was only one play in the fourth inning of one of 162, so really, nothing to stress over. But, you reap what you sow, so we’re all entitled to a little laugh at Gattis’ expense. Anyway, the Astros trounced the Mariners, 9-2. On to the next one!
