As the August 31 waiver deadline approaches, the Toronto Blue Jays still haven’t abandoned hope of trading Josh Donaldson. After the latest report to emerge, a potential trade may be finding traction after all.
Reports TSN’s Scott Mitchell, Donaldson’s locker has been cleared of his belongings over the last 24 hours, leaving only the stall and his nameplate. This is far from conclusive evidence of a trade, but the timing sure is curious.
Donaldson’s contract is set to expire in the offseason, so whether or not the Jays trade him, there very well could be a split between the two sides soon. With that in mind, there is some logic to trading him, and although he’s only appeared in 36 games this season due to a nagging calf injury, a contender could benefit from adding Donaldson to their lineup come playoff time.
As for the Jays, they’re not yet mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but things have certainly been disappointing in a 60-69 year. They have, however, won five straight games, thanks in large part to Kendrys Morales’ record-tying run of homers, so never say never.
