What would the Stanley Cup Playoffs be without a little CONTROVERSY!
Already this postseason, we’ve had a few moments in which particular fan bases have focused their crosshairs firmly on the zebras. There was John Tavares disallowed goal in Game 7 against the Lightning in which it was deemed that Justin Holl had committed interference. There was the Blake Coleman disallowed goal in which it was determined that he had kicked the puck in. Most recently, there’s the Cale Makar goal!
Towards the end of the 1st period during Game 1 of the Western Conference Final, Cale Makar charged across the blue line and absolutely ripped home a beautiful goal to put the Avs up 3-2. Little did we know this would end in total and complete controversial chaos.
As the replays played back, it became clear that Valeri Nichushkin was still fully in the offensive zone as the puck crossed the blue line. While some saw this as an easy offside call upon further review, the call ended up being onside due to the fact that Makar didn’t actually touch the puck until Nichushkin had tagged up.
Some argued that this was the right call, as the puck needs to be touched in order for an offside call to be made, while others believed this technicality should not have come into play considering Makar was fully in control of the puck despite not actually touching it.
Just about EVERYONE had an opinion.
