What will the future look like for the Toronto Maple Leafs? That's a question everyone has been asking in reference to how Toronto would keep all of their young players (Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner in particular).
On Tuesday, part of that question was answered as Matthews and the Leafs agreed to a 5-year extension.
Per @bobmckenzietsn, Auston Matthews has signed a 5-year extension with the @mapleleafs. The AAV of the contract is $11.634 million

There had been a lot of talk about teams potentially offer-sheeting Matthews in the future and some questioned how the Leafs would be able to sign all their young stars, but Kyle Dubas and company answered one of those questions and the hockey world reacted accordingly.
The first SB of $15.2M is due July 1, 2019. The second SB of $15.2M is due July 1, 2020. So in one calendar year, starting from this July 1 to July 1 of 2020, Matthews will receive $30.4M in SB.

Babcock on Matthews continued: "In order to do that, it’s pretty simple. You have to do the math. We have to work with them and that’s what [Kyle Dubas] and his group are doing with their people so it’s best for them and best for us...(2/2)"

Leafs sign Matthews for $11.634 Million which a $2 mil overpay. #GoodByeMitch

I’m sure many Leaf fans are disappointed in AM34’s 5-year term, but you can’t have Tavares and Matthews, with Marner still to be signed, and not have to make allowances/hard choices along the way. So a six-year window, it is.

This is bad contract. This is Kyle Dubas first mistake as are GM for that type of money this has to be an 8 year deal. In 5 years Matthew's is going to have the right to walk off into the sunset. Really bad.

Great job Dubas. No issues. No complaints. Works for all sides. We get to see @AM34 kill it for 5. @Marner93 next.
