Washington football fans were scared with another horrifying quarterback injury when newly acquired quarterback Alex Smith was forced to leave Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans with a broken leg. The collision occurred when Kareem Jackson and J.J. Watt teamed up to sack Smith on an awkward takedown. The 34-year-old was quickly carted off the field and had the initial look of a no-doubt season-ender, which was later confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who revealed details of what exactly happened to Smith’s leg. Brace yourselves because these are hard to read.
Here’s a look at the injury:
Warning: the following is extremely tough to watch:
The pain Smith must’ve gone through… yikes.
It wasn’t all bad news for Smith and his team, as head coach John Gruden announced that Smith’s surgery went well and that he’s expected to make a full recovery. In the meantime, backup Colt McCoy will take over duties.
As mentioned earlier, this wasn’t the first time a Washington QB has suffered a gruesome injury. Former Super Bowl winner Joe Theismann experienced a similarly horrific injury 33 years ago.
It’s going to be a long recovery for Smith before he gets back on the field, but hopefully he’ll be back sooner than later.
