A classic is coming back this weekend. The Memphis Grizzlies, celebrating their 25th year in existence this season, are throwing it back to their Vancouver-era jerseys and court design, right down to the original city name.
These are widely regarded as one of the slickest jerseys in NBA history and it’s nice to see the Grizzlies aren’t shying from their Vancouver roots, either.
It isn’t quite the same as the NBA coming back to Vancouver, but the classic Vancouver Grizzlies will be returning for a couple games this season, the first being this Saturday's game against the Lakers. The transformation is already underway, with the OG court brought back to life.
The Grizzlies are expected to be one of the West’s bottom-dwellers this season, but rookie standout Ja Morant is one of the most exciting young guns in the league to have rep a Vancouver jersey.
Plus, the Grizzlies drafted Vancouver-born Brandon Clarke this summer, and he’s off to a strong start in his career as well. They also have Mississauga native Dillon Brooks and even longtime Raptor Jonas Valanciunas to boot, so what we’re saying is, there’s no shortage of authentic Canadian content here.
Hopefully, the Grizzlies will plan a Vancouver throwback night for when the Raptors play in Memphis during March — that’ll also be Marc Gasol’s first game back in his former stomping grounds, so it could be major appointment viewing.
