Have no fear, Flames fans, the team isn't sending Johnny Gaudreau down to the AHL.
Instead, the Stockton Heat, have signed Johnny Gaudreau's little brother, Matthew, on an AHL deal.
If you were hoping that the Gaudreau brothers could unite on a line, then don't get your hopes up. The Flames didn't sign Gaudreau, as the Heat exclusively own his rights. If he doesn't make the Heat, he's eligible to be sent to the team's ECHL team, the Kansas City Mavericks.
According to Wes Gilbertson of the Calgary Sun, Matty Hockey plans on staying in the AHL for the entire campaign.
"My goal is to be in the AHL for the whole entire season,” Matthew said.
Like his other brother, Matthew graduated from the Boston College Eagles. In his third professional season, the 24-year-old has amassed 17 AHlL games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL.
There’s nothing to be upset about, getting compared to him.’ John is probably one of 10 players that become as good as what he is doing. You have him in a category with (Connor) McDavid, with (Sidney) Crosby, with (Patrick) Kane, with all of those guys. Any one of their brothers, they would feel the same way. You can’t get upset that somebody is comparing you, because they are just better than anybody else, really.
“I think of it as my own path. With him being so good and people saying stuff, I don’t get upset about it anymore. And I don’t really hear it anymore, to be honest. Guys want to be just as good as him, so they’re not going to chirp about it.”
In 88 career games in the ECHL, Gaudreau amassed 24 goals, 36 assists.
