The New Jersey Devils have one of the most savvy social media teams around and what that actually means is that they’re pretty good trolls.
One of their most common places to do some trolling is on their in-arena scoreboard and they were at it again last night. Basically nobody has been happy with the NHL’s review system over the last two years, with all the lengthy offside reviews and confusing goalie interference reviews. Last night, Tampa Bay’s goal was under review because of an offside challenge and New Jersey put up this photo on their scoreboard.
If you’re not familiar with Spongebob Squarepants, other than being the most popular source for memes, it’s a cartoon about a group of characters that live in the ocean. One of them is Patrick, the pink starfish that is pictured in the New Jersey photo, and he’s notoriously incompetent.
This photo in particular is part of a picture that is used in a meme where Patrick just keeps saying his name instead of doing his job properly.
Perhaps New Jersey was a little quick on the trigger with this one though, because the goal ended up being called back. New Jersey ended up losing the game anyways and are now down 3-1 in the series.
