This is sort of a cheap shot, but it’s also objectively hilarious, because... the Detroit Lions.
With Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs advancing on to the Super Bowl, Twitter user @skitchP made the astute observation that the MLB’s Detroit Tigers, who drafted Mahomes as a pitcher in 2014, have drafted more Super Bowl quarterbacks than the actual NFL team in their own city.
Dual-sport athletes are no rarity — the Kansas City Royals once drafted John Elway and Dan Marino in the same draft, and Tom Brady was drafted by the Montreal Expos, and Kyler Murray literally just happened — but this is really just another reason to have a laugh about hard times for the Lions.
Mahomes was actually considered a top baseball prospect and pitched with Texas Tech during his college career, but his commitments were to football first and he was a 37th round MLB draft pick due to the expectation that he would pursue the NFL. Obviously, that’s working out for him pretty well.
