People will come up with anything and call it a sport these days. That’s not a bad thing necessarily, but it certainly is a thing, and the latest thing to come to be are the Death Diving World Championships in Norway.
What is ‘death diving,’ you ask? Well, the name turns out to be highly appropriate, because what it is is bsaically a belly-flopping competition cranked to extreme — divers jump off the highest ledge of a diving platform, and instead of trying to stick a smooth entry like in, say, Olympic diving, these guys shoot for the loudest slappers possible.
Some of these poses — including some actual hands-on-hips hero poses — are incredible, and since finding out that this is a thing that exists, we haven’t been able to get over it. It’s incredible what the human mind can come up with and call a sport.
If you want to watch another ridiculous sport that might not cause as much vicarious discomfort as something called death diving, you should also check out the endlessly adorable World Dog Surfing Championship.
