Billy Hamilton is one of the fastest men in baseball, but not even he would have expected his speed to cause so much havoc for the Chicago Cubs.
When Hamilton took off for 2nd base he would have expected there’s a good chance that he’d swipe the bag successfully. He’s successfully stolen 21 bags on 25 attempts, but a few errors and the Cubs generally seeming to forget how to catch a baseball allowed the speedster to get a lot more than just the one stolen base.
While the kickout to centre field happens from time to time when a catcher’s throw to 2nd skips, there is no explaining your way out of a runner making it home. Realistically, Hamilton should have stopped at 3rd base, but luckily for him Willson Contreras was the third Cub in a row that was unable to field the ball cleanly. Just when it looked like he was dead to rights, Hamilton was trotting back to the dugout with a devilish smile on his face, having just been gifted a run.
Speed kills, but so does the inability to catch a ball.
