Close your eyes for a moment. Imagine you’re at a hockey rink. Now take a deep, deep breath, in through your nose…

What’s the first smell that comes to mind?

People obsess over the sounds of the game but the different smells don’t really get enough love. With that in mind, here are five that you maybe haven’t appreciated enough in the past. The list includes everything from steel, to food…

5) SKATE BLADES AFTER A SHARPENING

There’s something about that piping hot steel that just hits different. Seeing the sparks fly is one thing… but the smell afterward is a different kind of satisfaction. Just don’t get your nose to close, you don’t want to cut yourself (especially if you have a big nose like myself)

4) THE POSTS

Hot take here, but the smell of the posts kind of slap! They obviously don’t smell like flowers but they do induce feelings of nostalgia. If you’re wondering how they taste… just ask Auston Matthews…

3) FRESH ICE AFTER A FLOOD

Now imagine you’re waiting on the bench for pracy. The Zamboni does its final lap, and all you’re left with is this beautiful sheet of clean ice. Before your skates ruin it, you take that one monster sniff and take it all in. It’s a beautiful smell that can’t be described. You have to experience it for yourself.

2) CANTEEN FRENCH FRIES FROM AN OLD COMMUNITY CENTRE

This was an obvious choice. Some people prefer the smell of poutine but I’m more of a fries + ketchup kind of dude. They can get messy but hey, we’re talking about smell here. I’m hungry just thinking about them. No vinegar though, that kind of ruins everything.

1 ) STINKY HOCKEY BAG AFTER NOT AIRING IT OUT FOR A WEEK

Some hate it, I love it. One day, when we’re all lacin’em up for the last time, we’ll realize how much we actually loved that stinky smell.

Actual 1) HOCKEY WAX

Just keeding. It’s obviously hockey wax, especially the blue stuff. What’s better than putting it on your blade and giving it a good sniff afterward?! GOAT hockey smell.

So… what did we miss? Let us know your favourite smells of the game @BarDown.
