Free agent quarterback Jacoby Brissett plans to sign with the Arizona Cardinals to back up Kyler Murray, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Tuesday.

Brissett, 32, began the 2024 season as the New England Patriots' starting quarterback before the coaching staff replaced him in favor of No. 3 draft pick Drake Maye in Week 6.

In Week 8, he took over for Maye, who was checked for a concussion, and played the final three quarters in a 25-22 win over the New York Jets. Brissett called it one of his proudest moments of a challenging season, as he engineered a winning drive in the final minutes of regulation.

He finished the season 95-of-161 for 826 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception, and coaches credited him with mentoring Maye, paving the way for the rookie to start the final 12 games of the season and experience early career success.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Brissett entered the NFL as a third-round draft choice of the Patriots in 2016. He was with the Indianapolis Colts from 2017 to 2020, before joining the Miami Dolphins (2021), Cleveland Browns (2022), Washington Commanders (2023) and Patriots (2024).

In 2024, Brissett had craved the opportunity to start, but he didn't receive much support, as the Patriots had five different starting offensive line configurations in front of him, and one of the NFL's least-threatening receiving corps. In-game statisticians recorded him taking 49 hits over his first five starts as the Patriots opened the year 1-4.

Overall, Brissett has appeared in 87 regular-season games, with 53 starts. He has completed 61.1% of his passes (1,076 of 1,761) for 11,400 yards, with 53 touchdowns and 24 interceptions.
