Former Kansas City Chiefs safety Justin Reid reached an agreement Tuesday with the New Orleans Saints on a three-year, $31.5 million deal, including $22.25 million fully guaranteed, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.
A native of Prairieville, Louisiana, Reid will join a room with free safeties Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Howden after the departure of safety Will Harris, who agreed to a deal with the Washington Commanders on Tuesday. Mathieu played with Reid's older brother Eric at LSU.
Reid, 28, joined the Chiefs in 2022 as a free agent. A full-time starter in three seasons in Kansas City, he had 3 interceptions, 4 sacks and 265 sacks in 51 regular-season games. He also filled in on kickoff duties for the Chiefs in 2022 and '24, handling 16 kickoffs total.
Reid also had 1.5 sacks in 10 playoff games, winning two championships in Kansas City.
Before joining the Chiefs, Reid played four seasons for the Houston Texans, who picked him in the third round of the 2018 NFL draft out of Stanford. Reid had seven interceptions and two sacks with the Texans.
The Saints turned over their staff this spring after hiring Kellen Moore as head coach. Louisiana native Terry Joseph, who was hired away from a position at Texas, will be the defensive pass game coordinator.
The Saints entered March needing to free up a significant amount of cap space but restructured several contracts, including quarterback Derek Carr, center Erik McCoy, guard Cesar Ruiz and defensive end Carl Granderson, to open room. Sources told ESPN the Saints also reworked the contracts of linebackers Demario Davis and Pete Werner and were negotiating with Mathieu on a reworked contract on Tuesday.
Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said at the NFL scouting combine that the team planned to be active in free agency despite the cap situation. They have agreed to new contracts with defensive end Chase Young, tight end Juwan Johnson and wide receiver Dante Pettis, while trading for New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux.
ESPN's Adam Teicher and Katherine Terrell contributed to this report.
