On Sunday, Simone Biles broke the world record and then broke it again.
Competing at the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany, Biles won gold on her beam routine to set a new record for all-time World medals; a couple hours later, she broke her own record again with another gold on floor.
That’s 25 World medals for Biles now, and 19 of them gold; no other gymnast, male or female, has ever achieved those totals. Only Larisa Latynina of the former Soviet Union has more combined World and Olympic medals (32), a record that Biles (30) could break next year.
GOAT? Yeah, probably.
Most people will probably remember Biles from her breakout performance at the 2016 Summer Olympics; she was a part of that “Final Five” USA team with Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman that dominated in Rio with a medal in every event.
Biles will be back for next year’s Olympics in Tokyo, which she says will be her last. Beyond that, it remains to be seen if she’ll continue to participate in the yearly World Championships and pad her already historic totals.
