Team Sweden captain Lias Andersson was heavily criticized at the 2018 World Junior Hockey Championship after he threw his silver medal into the stands following Sweden’s 3-1 gold medal loss to the Canadians.
Many were quick to criticize the 19-year-old’s leadership, but a new detail about his health at the tournament might alter their perspective. According to TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Andersson played through the semi-final and gold medal game with a separated shoulder.
Guess that explains the underhand toss…
McKenzie was one of various hockey personalities who defended Andersson following the incident. He and TSN’s Craig Button Acknowledged he's a "fantastic kid" and a "tough competitor," which is further magnified by the recent report.
The youngster's compete was also acknowledged by Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty. The captain said he loved Andersson’s throw, and the recent news should only increase his respect for Andersson.
When it’s all on the line, some players will clearly do whatever it takes to win. For those questioning Andersson’s leadership, perhaps this will alter your opinion.
