A lot of universities in the NCAA were struggling after COVID shut the doors to sports games in 2020. Athletics of course are a large portion of how most universities make their money. Some sports make money then others which led to certain schools making the decision to cut certain sports they offer at their campus.

Stanford was one of the schools affected by the lack of revenue from athletics which caused them to cut 11 sports one of them being wrestling.

This is sad news for those students who have been working to earn a scholarship or are playing for these schools already. That is the case for Shane Griffith who is a sophomore at Stanford and watched his program get ripped away from him and his teammates even after being one of the most dominant wrestlers in the country in his first two seasons.

Griffith battled this adversity and uncertainty in the best way possible by winning a National Championship in the 165 pound category.

Griffith talked about what the win meant to him and maybe this will change the mind of decision makers at Stanford after Griffith added more hardware to the colleges trophy case.
