It may be over now, but what a season it’s been for the Carolina Hurricanes. Their run in the second half of the season through to the Eastern Conference final was unexpected, and it seems to have re-energized the fans in Raleigh — along with those Storm Surge celebrations they loved so much at the PNC Arena.

To celebrate the year, the Hurricanes invited season ticket holders to paint the ice, and we have to admit that it was pretty cool. Of course, they aren’t the only team in the NHL that does this, but you can really see how much of an identity this year’s Canes squad developed among their fanbase.

With nods to team hallmarks like “Bunch of Jerks,” the Storm Surge and Hamilton the Pig, this Hurricanes season is clearly going to be one that goes down in memory. Even when you don’t win it all, it’s always nice to turn in the kind of year that resonates with the city.

Around the league, teams including the Avs and the Devils have also been noted for taking part in this tradition.
