Canadians take pride in their perseverance through the cold. When you spend half the year in sub-zero temperatures, you have to take pride in something!

That’s what made Tuesday evening’s “Iceteca” such a classic. Not only was it a World Cup Qualifier with stakes as high as ever, playing against the CONCACAF juggernaut Mexico, but it was happening with a boat load of snow on the ground.

This set the scene for a game that will instantly go down in history as a classic Canadian soccer match. The 2-1 victory came on the back of two Cyle Larin goals, but the moment of the match may have been directly after the goal when Sam Adekugbe pulled off the most Canadian celebration imaginable.

Slip that right into Canadian sports lore, that’s a celebration Canadians will remember for a long time to come.

Whether the Canadians would have taken down Mexico in a fair weather game is unknown, but there’s no doubt that the snow played a factor Tuesday evening. It’s only fitting that Canada’s coldest token would be there to catch Adekugbe when he falls.

Oh, and Canada’s on top of the World Cup Qualifier standings.
