The hockey world endured a huge loss on Saturday when Hamilton Police confirmed the death of former NHL goaltender Ray Emery on Sunday afternoon. Waves of support came in for the goaltender and his family, including an emotional message from current Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas. The 31-year-old had strong ties to Emery, serving as the Toronto Marlies’ GM during Emery’s time with the team and shared ties through the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. After hearing of the news, Dubas shared an emotional message on his Twitter account.

Emery went through hip surgery during his career and simply walking was a promising prognosis, according to The Star’s Mark Zwolinski. He would go on to play three games in Toronto.

By the end of his NHL career, Emery took part in 287 games and managed to capture a Stanley Cup with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2013. The Hamilton native was drafted in the 4th round of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.
