Unfortunately, the Raptors 905 season has come to an end.
After leading the G League in the regular season with a 22-3 record and then advancing to the semifinal, the JV Raptors were knocked out of title contention in a 127-100 loss to the Delaware Blue Coats.
It's an unfortunate end to a great season with a lot of bright spots, in which the play of many players can give Raptors fans excitement about the near future of their prospect pipeline as well as their overarching program. After such a great season, a bunch of Raptors 905 representatives should be up for award considerations, as well as call-ups to the G League proper.
If you've been paying attention, then these names may be familiar to you already. If not, then it's time to get familiar.
Patrick Mutombo
In his first season as the Raptors 905 head coach, Patrick Mutombo led the team all the way to the best regular season record as well as the G League semifinal. He spent four years on the bench as a Raptors assistant coach, including in the 2019 championship season, so he's not new to this by any means.
Award watch: Coach of the Year
Alize Johnson
A former Indiana Pacers second round pick and Raptors training camp invitee, Alize Johnson has put up some seriously bonkers stat-lines in the G League if you’re been keeping track. He’s been doing a bit of everything, from scoring to rebounding to playmaking to defense, and in fact the outside jumper might be the only missing aspect of his game.
Still, when you're having 36-17-5 or 25-13-8 games on the regular, nobody is really complaining. It feels like a minor miracle that he didn’t have a triple-double this season. Johnson has interest from a lot of NBA teams, including the Raptors, and he’ll probably earn award honours as one of the G League’s best players this season.
Award watch: MVP, All-G League Team
Henry Ellenson
Another one of the Raptors’ training camp invitees this season, Henry Ellenson has been one of the smoothest scorers in all of the G League. As a big fella with scoring range from all levels, teams have had a tough time stopping him as the 905’s go-to option. In the fourth quarter, he’s been cash money. Like Johnson, he’ll be up for some awards too.
Award watch: All-G League Team
Nik Stauskas
CANADIAN! Obviously, Stauskas has bounced around the league for a few years since going in the top-10 of the 2014 NBA Draft, but he’s been taking and making some really difficult threes for the 905 this season — the kind of off-ball weapon you can’t take your eyes off.
Award watch: All-G League Team
Gary Payton II
Like his old man, GP2 is a defensive hound. He’s the sort of defender that turns one-on-one defense into must-see TV, falling into the lineage of guys like Marcus Smart or Tony Allen. Even while mostly coming off the bench, he led the G in steals this season with 2.5 swipes per game — and he’s a terror on the fast break.
Award watch: Defensive Player of the Year, All-Defensive Team
