It seems to be happening more and more these days. Position players taking the mound and showing off what they’ve got.
And why not? It’s essentially always in a blowout where there isn’t much to lose, and it gives the fans something to watch while the game itself seems to be all but decided.
It also provides a golden moment every once in a while. On Thursday, Charlie Culberson subbed from a position player onto the mound to act as their pitcher. While it’s not his usual day job, he did a pretty good job of it.
Not only was that slider sick, twisted, and nasty, he led into it like a pro.
Unfortunately, he was unable to keep the magic going.
It’s not the first time he’s done this either, and it’s not the first time he’s found success. After the game, Culberson spoke with the media about the enjoyable spectacle.
If his bat ever dries up, at least he knows there’s a possible career elsewhere on the diamond!
