Paul Kariya entering the Hockey Hall of Fame in November was a big moment in hockey history for someone who a lot of people had missed since he disappeared from the hockey scene.
His entire weekend with was filled with heartwarming moments, especially those with longtime teammate Teemu Selanne. It was all laughs and smiles for that weekend, but his time as a Hall of Famer took a twist recently. The CBC reported that Kariya’s new Hockey Hall of Fame display was robbed last month.
According to a CBC report, the Toronto Police stated that a man “Made off with a 1993 World Junior Championship Ring and a 1994 World Championship Ring that were held in the case”. The police also shared these photos of the suspect:
Lanny McDonald apparently called Kariya as well, who “Understood that these things happen”.
What a bummer. Those were two pretty big moments in hockey history. Kariya was part of the 1994 team that won Canada's first gold at the World Hockey Championships in 20 years, and it kind of started Canada’s recent stretch of dominance in all hockey formats.
We’re not even sure what someone is going to do with these rings. It can’t be any easy thing to sell.
It’s a pretty niche item that only Canadians would want, but most Canadians are going to know that they are stolen. So, maybe this guy was just the biggest Kariya fan in the world. If that’s the case, at least they went to a true fan.
