Matt Cullen entered the NHL well before the Anaheim Ducks dropped ‘Mighty’ from their name and he’s still going strong as he took to the ice for his 1,500th career game on Tuesday night.
The Pittsburgh Penguins made sure to make the night a special one for Cullen, who became the 20th player in NHL history to suit up in 1,500 career regular season games, as every member of the Penguins took to the ice for the pre-game skate in No. 7 Matt Cullen jerseys.
The pre-game jersey tribute wasn’t the only thing the team had in store for the 42-year-old as they also added special patches to the front of their jerseys for their tilt with the Florida Panthers.
Before the game, the Virginia, Minnesota native received some pretty awesome gifts from his team and teammates, including a commemorative silver-plated hockey stick and a plaque, as well as an improved Polaris.
Cullen has played for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Florida Panthers, Carolina Hurricanes, New York Rangers, Ottawa Senators, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators and Pittsburgh Penguins, has 464 assists and 728 points in 1,499 games, and has been part of three Stanley Cup winning teams (Carolina 2006, Pittsburgh 2016, 2017).
