For at least another year, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots will continue to be a fixture in the Super Bowl. After being the Chiefs in the AFC Championship, the team will make its ninth Super Bowl appearance in the Brady era.
It seemed like Patrick Mahomes, one of the best young quarterbacks to come through in the NFL in some time, would have a real chance of beating Brady in his age-41 season. That game did go to overtime, but in the end, it was the Patriots victorious once again.
After that game, however, Brady did pull Mahomes aside for a private conversation. It was a classy gesture at the time, with one of the NFL’s great quarterbacks taking the time to acknowledge a potential next.
Appearing on ESPN’s NFL Live before the Pro Bowl, Mahomes finally revealed what was said between the two quarterbacks.
“It was such a great game, with so many emotions going back and forth in the end. I felt like he just came up to me, saying, ‘Good game,’ and everything like that. He was in my place, he was young, he got to win the Super Bowl in the first year with [Tedy Bruschi] and everybody. He understands that, time, it flies by, so make sure to put in the work. I think he saw that I put in the work to be in those situations.”
While this won’t be the year for Mahomes to get his Super Bowl, the 23 year old has plenty of future left, and there’s no doubt that we haven’t seen the best of him yet. Already, the Chiefs appear ready to commit to a $200 million contract extension once Mahomes is eligible to make him their quarterback of the future. It'll be interesting to see what kind of highs Mahomes reaches in his career.
