In Southern Ontario natural disasters aren’t too much of a concern. Sitting safely away from major coastlines that are often more dramatically affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes, earth quakes, and tsunamis, Ontario residents rarely have to worry about mother nature sending a curveball their way (other than massive amounts of snow, of course). On September 21st, all that went out the window when two destructive tornados touched down near Ottawa.

No fatalities were recorded, but the twisters still proved to be devastating. Homes were torn up, cars flipped, and a handful of stories emerged such as a father clinging to his daughter as the storm tried to sweep her away. In the end no one was killed, but many lives had been changed.

The Ottawa Senators are doing their part to aid those effected, and they announced on Friday that the Ottawa Senators Foundation had worked to raise more than $340,000, including a matching donation of $100,000 from the foundation itself, to be put towards tornado relief.

The campaign was started through a GoFundMe initiative, and it quickly took off. The Foundation has said that it is putting the money towards two crucial avenues, food security and mental health.

As much as no one would ever wish a tornado upon a community, it is amazing to see how much the fall out can unify it’s people.
