The Auston Matthews contract speculation has finally come to an end.

On Tuesday afternoon, TSN’s Bob McKenzie announced that the 21-year-old and the Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to a five-year extension with an annual average salary of $11.634 million. And of course, although the first two numbers are the most important numbers of the deal… it’s the last two numbers that have people talking. You probably noticed that the figure includes 34 at the end of it…

It could just be a massive coincidence but doesn’t that seem a little unlikely? Sidney Crosby’s average cap-hit also includes his jersey number except a decimal point separates his. Fans were quick to point out the detail on Twitter.

Some fans went even further by suggesting the whole number was based around his draft position, year he was drafted AND number. But we see that as extremely unlikely.

Back to the contract… McKenzie reported that the year-by-year-details of the deal will go as follows:

Now that Matthews is taken care of, the Leafs will turn their attention toward Mitch Marner. Just keep an eye on his contract ending in 16!
