Unless you’re an alum of Ohio State University, it has probably been pretty irritating for sports fans to hear athletes refer to it as THE Ohio State University over the years. That is the official name of the school in full, but that doesn’t make it any less annoying.

Well, Ohio State is leaning into it. They’ve actually filed a trademark for the word ‘the,’ with the intent of using it on their gear.

Shortly after that, ‘the’ began trending on Twitter.

Yeah, we’re sure this will go over with other schools that have ‘the’ in their names (so, basically all of them). For example, the University of Miami is also often known as simply The U, and the University of Michigan fired back on Twitter with this humorous jab.

We’ve seen some ridiculous trademark and copyright applications before, and that’s often just how the business world works when it comes to branding. Seriously though, you don’t get to file a trademark on one of the most common, foundational words of the English language, right? Like, nah.

When even Buffalo Wild Wings is taking shots at you, that’s an L, isn’t it?
