The NWSL is back in action on Saturday, becoming the first major team sport in the United States to return to play.
Before the first game of the league’s Challenge Cup tournament, players from the North Carolina Courage and Portland Thorns — including Canadian superstar Christine Sinclair — took a knee during the national anthem, also wearing Black Lives Matter to express solidarity.
When the Premier League returned earlier in June, we saw something similar happen when players took a knee before the opening match; the league has also replaced all player nameplates with Black Lives Matter to begin the season.
The NFL has already given its players the green-light to protest during the anthem this season, and as more and more major sports come back, it’ll be interesting to see how many athletes choose to partake in protest.
