Justin Gallegos is a junior and distance runner at the University of Oregon who runs with the school’s track club. Gallegos, who has cerebral palsy, participates in half-marathons and cross country races with the school, and was previously noticed by Nike for his story — they partnered with Gallegos to create a shoe to assist runners with disabilities (the FlyEase).
On October 6th, also World Cerebral Palsy Awareness Day, Gallegos became the first pro athlete with cerebral palsy to sign with Nike. A representative from the brand surprised him at the finish line of one of his races, offering him a contract in a tearful moment for the runner.
Initially aiming to finish races when he began running marathons, Gallegos has since hoped to complete a half-marathon within two hours. He came close in April, running a 2:03.49.
Nike has drawn notice for its emphasis on tackling social issues through sports and partnering with athletes for their advocacy as well as their sporting excellence. In September, their “Just Do It” commercial memorably starred Colin Kaepernick.
