Nick Kyrgios had himself an afternoon on Thursday when he faced Rafael Nadal in the second round at Wimbledon.
Apart from intentionally firing a volley at Nadal’s chest (he even admitted to it afterward), the Australian managed to land two stunning underhand serves against his counterpart. Down 5-2 in the first set, Kyrgios noticed Nadal standing deep and placed a perfect underhand serve just out of the Spaniards’ reach to take the game. Nadal didn’t appear to stand a chance.
After dropping the first set, Kyrgios said “what the hay” and decided to give it another go. He didn’t complete the ace, but he did manage to win the game after Nadal fired the return home into the net. He’d go on to win the set to even the match.
Kyrgios has a history of whipping out the underhand serve, with one coming against Nadal just this past February. After mis-hitting the shot, the 24-year-old went on to defeat Nadal, who later blasted Kyrgios for lacking “respect” for his opponent and the fans.
Say what you want about Kyrgios, but the man’s got skill.
