Before the Toronto Marlies became the Toronto Maple Leafs’ AHL team there was the St. John’s Maple Leafs.

The team played out of Newfoundland from 1991-2005 before the team took on the Toronto Marlies as their AHL club, but St. John’s received a new team last year as the Newfoundland Growlers officially joined the ECHL and captured the Kelly Cup in their first year of existence.

This year, the Growlers are going to honour the team who called St. John’s home before they did by wearing throwback St. John’s Maple Leafs jerseys on December 7, 2019, when they play the Worcester Railers.

The Growlers will hit the ice wearing jerseys inspired by the original ones worn by the St. John’s Maple Leafs during the 1991-92 season, and we’re guessing they’re going to be a hit among not just Growlers fans, but Maple Leafs fans everywhere.

“The Toronto Maple Leafs have shaped the hockey community here in Newfoundland and Labrador so much over the years and we are proud to be able to celebrate the past, present and future of hockey in this province with these beautiful jerseys,” said Growlers owner Dean MacDonald in a team statement.

Jerseys are already available to the public, while the jerseys the players wear later this year will be auctioned off as part of their NTV Teddy Toss Night.
