On Wednesday, the sports world mourned the passing of former NBA commissioner David Stern.
Stern was the commissioner of the league for a 30-year period, from 1984 to 2014, and he’s often credited for the popularity boom of the game in the 1990s as well as for cultivating international talent to the NBA.
For the rest of the season, NBA players and officials will honour Stern with a commemorative black band across their jerseys and official uniforms.
Here’s what the band will look like on player jerseys, as shown on a Miami Heat uniform.
On top of the symbolic gesture, dozens of NBA players past and present shared their own personal tributes to Stern, either on social media or during interviews with media members.
“Thank you for your commitment to the beautiful game of basketball that has changed so many young adult/kids lives and more importantly your vision to make our game become WORLDWIDE was a vision only you could make happen!” wrote LeBron James on Instagram.
