Montreal Canadiens defenceman Joride Benn might just have the weirdest nickname in the NHL.
Yesterday marked the defender’s 31st birthday and the good wishes came pouring in. One stood out from the rest and it came from his teammate Andrew Shaw. The forward took to Twitter to wish Benn a happy bday and referred to him as ‘Upside Down Face’, referencing his ridiculously grizzled beard.
Guess the guy kind of does look a bit like Big Foot!
Some fans were pretty confused with the nickname, though Shaw insisted that he loves it. But isn’t that a little nuts? “ Hey Upside Down Face, pass it I’m open!” Just seems a little weird.
So where does ‘Upside Down Face’ rank against other nicknames around the league? Here are a couple notable ones to compare it to.
Marc-Edouard “Pickles” Vlasic
Pat “Little Ball of Hate” Verbeek
Peter “Ned Flanders” Budaj (that one is pretty sweet)
Steve “The Puck Goes Inski”Buzinski”
Next time you’re at a Habs game and you’re cheering on Benn, don’t feel weird about calling him by his nickname. Even if it is kind of frightening.
