We’ve seen all sorts of different ceremonial first pitches take place over the years.

From people using hockey sticks to shoot the ball to photographers getting smoked, we thought we had seen it all, but that all changed on Thursday night.

Ahead of the series opener between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds at the Great American Ball Park, professional tennis player Monica Puig and reigning Olympic champion had the honours of throwing out the first pitch. She delivered the ball to home plate, but she didn’t throw it.

Puig happens to be dating Reds utility man Derek Dietrich, so it was easy for them to decide on who to put behind home plate to catch the opening pitch.

We told you that you see something new at the ballpark every time you go.
