Receiving your first cheque as a professional athlete is a pretty big deal and can often change your life in an instant.

With the signing bonuses dealt out in today’s world, it’s often enough to buy you a dream car, put a down payment on a house or even make someone’s dreams come true. Under Armour sat down with some of their athletes to find out what some NHL players did with their first cheques and you hear a lot of what you’d expect.

Taylor Hall talks about some suits that he got chirped for later, Phil Kessel and Drew Doughty grabbed a couple dream cars, which are all great, but considering it is gift giving SZN, we thought we’d feature Mitch Marner’s decision.

Mitch decided to go on an undercover mission to buy his mom a new car after all she did for him growing up.

We have no doubt that tons of the players did something similar not long after with their cheques, but it’s a great story. Marner is very close with his mother, even living with her in downtown Toronto during his rookie season,  so it’s understandable that she would be the first thing he thought of when he received his first cheque.

Hockey moms and dads do a lot for us kids as we’re growing up, so it’s always nice to hear a success story where some of their dreams come true too.

Happy Valentine's Day to the three ladies that I couldn't live without. Thanks for putting up with me😁❤️
