Team Sweden lost in dramatic fashion last night in the World Junior Championship’s gold medal contest, but the biggest drama occurred after the final horn.
After Tyler Steenbergen scored with less than two minutes remaining to seal the contest, the Swedes could only watch their adversary celebrate the victory. As the team received their silver medals in the postgame ceremony, captain Lias Andersson promptly threw his award into the crowd.
Andersson answered his critics afterward and explained how a past silver medal has essentially had no use in his life over the years.
Fans and members of the hockey community have shared their two cents on the situation. Many have argued that Andersson’s action was a display of poor sportsmanship, but Montreal Canadiens captain Max Pacioretty had a different take on it. Pacioretty said “I loved it”, and compared the scenario to losing in the Stanley Cup final.
The 29-year-old wasn’t the only hockey personality to defend the youngster either. Bob McKenzie and Craig Button were both quick to point out Andersson’s strong character and reminded viewers that he’s just a kid.
Whether you view his actions as unsportsmanlike or not, it’s nice to at least see some compete in him. No one likes losing, and Andersson provided a very strong reminder of just that.
