Making the cut to represent Team Canada at the World Juniors is an incredible honour but to be named its captain? That’s a whole different animal.
On Christmas day, just a day before the tournament, Max Comtois was named captain of the squad. Comtois will be the only player returning from last year’s championship team after Ottawa Senators prospect Alex Formenton suffered a lower body injury in pre-tournament action. Comtois, a 50th overall pick by the Ducks in 2017, responded to the honour and when asked about the last time he was captain of a team, he said he simply couldn’t remember…
Don’t you think you’d remember the last time you were the captain of a team? Most players go their whole life without wearing a ‘C’ on their chest! Maybe he was just trying to be humble…
Comtois proved to be a key piece of Canada’s gold medal run last season, posting 3 goals and 3 assists in the team’s seven games this season. For the record, he did wear an ‘A’ for Canada at the 2016-17 U-18 tournament. This season he has three goals and four assists in five games with the Drummondville Voltiguers.
Action kicks off tonight between Canada and Denmark at 8 PM ET across TSN. Time will tell how Comtois and his teammates fare over the next couple of week.
