Matt Bonner was a fan favourite on several teams from college to his NBA career, including the Toronto Raptors, and today he announces his retirement.

Bonner played for the Raptors in the first two season of his career, followed by 10 seasons in San Antonio. He was known as the “Red Rocket” and was a stellar three point shooter, finishing with a 3P% above .400 in 8/12 years, and never far below that in the other four.

He was a truly unique player and personality, which is why so many fans were drawn to him and it’s also why you shouldn’t be surprised that he has announced his retirement in a one-of-a-kind way.

The initial joke there is the Bonner is saying that no one cares about his retirement, but that’s where he’s wrong. Many fans appreciate what he brought to the court every game and he was one of the most consistent players of his time. He was the perfect role player on a Spurs team that was heralded for their depth for many year, being a part of two of their NBA Championship teams.

It’s hard to believe that in just one year, we’ve seen the Black Mamba and, now, the Red Mamba call it quits. Maybe someday, we’ll see him riding the subway in Toronto once again.
