Attending West Virginia University would be a lot of fun for one simple reason: John Denver’s iconic bar favourite, ‘Take Me Home, Country Roads.’
Having such an legendary sing-a-long song based after the university’s home state (and namesake) would certainly lead to a lot of raucous moments, particularly in the bars and at sporting events. While the Mountaineers undoubtedly utilize the song to its fullest extent, it also opens up the possibility for opposing schools and their students to troll.
That was the case for the Mountaineers Men’s Basketball team on Friday when they were down by 10 to Marquette at the Shriners Children's Charleston Classic semifinal. With the crowd belting out the famous John Denver tune acapella, Marquette star of the night Tyler Kolek decided to join in.
Kolek had gone off for 18 points on 7-12 shooting to go along with 8 assists, so he was clearly feeling pretty good on the night.
Kolek and the Golden Eagles are now set to square off with the St Bonaventure Bonnies on Sunday, who beat Clemson in their own semifinal. Whether Kolek will be warming up the vocal chords for the title shot remains to be seen.
