Everybody wants calls to be right in sports, but many NHL fans have become exhausted with the offside reviews in hockey – mainly when they’re barely distinguishable on replay and from a significant amount of time before the goal.
Most fans have been on both sides of the reviews at this point, with the most vocal part of that audience groaning whenever those iPads come out onto the ice.
Last night may have been the most high profile case of this yet. Let’s transport back in time to just after PK Subban’s goal last night. Of course, people rooting for the Penguins are bummed. Most other hockey fans, witnessed one of the game’s most prolific players opening the scoring of the Stanley Cup Final for the underdog expansion team in thrilling fashion.
To sum things up, we’ll throw it over to PK Subban’s brother and Boston Bruins prospect, Malcom Subban:
PK Subban is celebrating, the Preds are going crazy…hold on, there’s a challenge on the play. The play is under review.
How are you holding up over there, Malcom?
So, we know it’s a challenge of the onside call earlier in the play. For the most part, this is the kind of view that most of the audience is looking at, wavering back and forth based on each pixel (All four of them) and trying to make their decision.
It’s an extremely difficult call to overturn with the views provided, but nonetheless the refs eventually make their decision, calling it “No Goal” and returning the game to a scoreless tie.
Cue the face palm.
Of course, PK’s brother has an obvious bias – we just thought it was a funny play-by-play of the events unfolding. If were being honest, it does look like the right call was made, but hockey fans aren’t so sure they can say the same about the rule as a whole.
